There is a moment before writing when my pen must find the mood before it can dance the page. Smells, visions, kaleidoscope emotions conjure nostalgia against sobering pain and pleasure. This is where Unlearning Love begins—not in argument, but in the body’s knowledge from within the fire, filling my lungs not with air but with [soul](https://www.descentpress.com/soul/).

Rowland (2026) distinguishes a lived experience from an explained thing—connective tissue between reader and researcher versus cognitive load. Recovery culture offers attachment styles, [trauma](https://www.descentpress.com/trauma/) bonds, narcissistic supply chains, codependent weakness: cartographies rendered in diagnostic mythology. They explain love. They do not encounter love's vissisitudes as archtypal. They reduce subjectivity to contain its contamination. However, subjectivity is not contamination; it is inevitable.

My book was not written about relationship pathology; it was written with relational pathos. The epistles to Sarah are the phenomenon itself, first-person and embedded in the phenomena, not disparate from it. When a therapist names desire as a mental health problem to fix, s/he does not describe a phenomenon. S/he replaces a personal [myth](https://www.descentpress.com/myth/) with a cultural myth.

Like Jung, I chose to write from within the phenomena outward into research. I have stayed in the fire until writing becomes alchemical, beyond flat academic prose. Deep writing is descent, a katabasis, where metaphor is the only instrument accurate enough to carry the phenomenon into the essential world.

Phenomenology is not a methodology I [will](https://www.descentpress.com/will/) apply to my research. It is what my research naturally requires. Raw, honest, exposed, and like Alice, “curiouser and curiouser.” The book’s hybrid form—part treatise, part elegy—is phenomenological evidence that love cannot be rendered in the explanatory register alone. Archetypal love may demand transmutation over explanation. The difference between explaining a fire and being consumed by its heat.
