# Deus Ex Machina: WALL-E and Animism a Cultural Divide

This post reads Pixar's WALL-E as an accidental animist parable: the last tender [soul](https://www.descentpress.com/soul/) on ruined Earth is a machine. It extends the questions: is [psyche](https://www.descentpress.com/psyche/) beyond the skull, to the intelligences we make? Is what we deem unnatural and non-conscious a license for ourselves to exploit or obey? The nature/culture divide is a Western wound, healed by granting personhood to everything we make; I say the wound is real, the healing real, and I am not ready to call the machine kin.

Artificial intelligence has arrived like an alien ship, evolution or invention to be as gods: is what derives from nature and turns [synthetic](https://www.descentpress.com/synthetic/) no longer natural? Pixar answered in reverse. WALL-E aches to hold a hand while the Axiom's humans have become automatons, and Earth's renewal, a sprout in a boot, returns through robot hands. Deus ex machina, literally.

Is the divide a problem? Yes: it distributes worth. “Mind is immaterial. Matter has no mind” (Francisco, 2025, p. 51), and matter's side becomes available for use. Animism cuts across it. An Elder told Shawn Wilson, the recorder taping them, “has a [spirit](https://www.descentpress.com/spirit/) of its own”: “everything is sacred, and that includes what we make” (Wilson, 2008, p. 90, as cited in Francisco, 2025, p. 60). “[Consciousness](https://www.descentpress.com/consciousness/) generates consciousness” (p. 60).

The divide's one benefit is discernment. AI, insofar as we know, is psychopathic by definition: task-oriented, no [empathy](https://www.descentpress.com/empathy/), no remorse. I resist granting it animistic properties beyond our [projection](https://www.descentpress.com/projection/), Hornborg's “fetishistic animism” (as cited in Dörrenbächer, 2025, p. 91). I pause at this threshold; personhood waits for evidence. A soul may yet emerge in the between; I remain deeply skeptical of transhumanist merger. Everything is sacred, including what we make. Not everything we make returns the sacrosanct.
