Epistolary Expression as Research

Depth psychology research begins where conventional experimental science draws the line: at the border of the subject. The scientific method depends on the subject/object split. The investigator stands outside the phenomenon, controls variables, and produces repeatable results. The psyche is not a repeatable result. Depth psychology questions that split by positing an autonomous unconscious that participates in the research act, generating images, dreams, and symbols no laboratory can isolate. The researcher is not outside the phenomenon but constituted by it. Where experimental science demands objectivity as the condition of knowledge, depth psychology recognizes subjectivity as a fundamental instrument. The psyche does not hold still while measurements are made. It speaks through what measurement excludes.

JABR takes this paradigm further. Where depth psychology research still operates primarily through discursive analysis and interpretive description, JABR creates. It produces material art objects that are themselves research instruments, open to reinterpretation in ways a journal article never is. Rowland's four Ps frame the distinction: a multicontextual paradigm that resists disciplinary hierarchy, preparation that includes embodied and imaginal engagement alongside library scholarship, a process grounded in active imagination and amplification, and projection, the making of meaning through artistic forms. The crucial difference is the "third." JABR focuses on the Jungian symbol that is neither subject nor object but both, a transdisciplinary space where the collective unconscious enters the work. The researcher does not simply study the psyche's images. The researcher makes with them and reports back.

A JABR project I have unconsciously pursued: inhabiting recovery culture's diagnostic vocabulary through epistolary writing found in my book, letting the language of pathos speak until it exposes what it domesticates. Not a critique from outside but enchantment turned inside out, the way Weishaus's poetry inhabits nuclear language to make visible its psychic cost.
