# Existential Introspection: Contemplation in Context

My decision to attend Pacifica was made many years before I arrived. Now that I am here, studying Jung in context under Susan’s guidance, I find myself in a classroom that demands more than intellectual recall. It demands the learned skill of holding multiple perspectives simultaneously without losing the thread of one’s thesis, while deploying balance and cogent specificity.

What I have come to value most is the way engaging Jung in context expands my capacity for nuance. We encounter him not only as an intellectual giant and iconoclast, but as a man with flaws—a human like the rest of us. As Rowland states, “‘Personal [myth](https://www.descentpress.com/myth/)’ becomes analytical psychology in a confession of a crucial weighting on the theories as a life’s work” (Rowland, 2003, p. 23). Jung’s personal myth was never separate from his [shadow](https://www.descentpress.com/shadow/), his complexes, or his [ego](https://www.descentpress.com/ego/). His genius lay not only in his theories but in placing his (personal) psychology on display, demonstrating that [individuation](https://www.descentpress.com/individuation/) is inseparable from the life that produces it.

Studying Jung’s blind spots has made me confront my own. I cannot assume all of mine are visible simply because I have made many of them so. What appears as shortsightedness, even prejudice in one area of Jung’s life, may surface in an entirely different domain of my own, and the honest scholar must hold that possibility. Seeing his flaws has deepened my respect for his bravery in living out his personal myth for all to examine.

Performing a critical analysis of Jung cracked open a door into my life across time. This course has sharpened something in me. Not the impulse to sanitize my thoughts for fear of criticism, but to hone them, to fashion precision into a razor I wield with equity for all.
