1. Etymology

The **senex** is the psyche’s old man: balanced or rigid, generous or authoritarian, wise or dried-out. Babies can show senex features; old bodies can still live as [puer aeternus](https://www.descentpress.com/index/puer-aeternus/). Jungians treat it as archetype, not a developmental stage.

Paired with the puer, it is the necessary opposite: discipline against flight, ground against spirit-only idealism.
